The following has been taken from Oticon, Inc.'s Workbook for Parents of Children who are Newly Identified as Hard of Hearing by Melanie Sisson, Au.D.:
It helps to take things one step at a time. Be open about your feelings. Allow others to help. It will help to have an upbeat mindset, learn about hearing loss and take an active role in your child’s speech and language development and schooling. You must look after the health of your body and mind in order to play that active role. So, take time for yourself, time to relax, get enough rest and eat well. You can find support and advice among hearing and speech experts, teachers and other parents of children who are hard of hearing. It is very common to feel lonely. You are not alone. Don’t be afraid to seek help and support.
There will be things that are challenging in your child’s life. Your child can also have a lot of success. Your child, like children with normal hearing, will thrive in a setting full of love, patience and praise. Rules and limits that are set and enforced, chances to learn language, and chances to learn problem solving skills are also important for your child’s development.
